COSTA RICA
Campaign Against Shark-Finning in Costa Rica
In recent years, Asia’s appetite for shark fin soup has meant big business for Costa Rica. The exorbitant profits from the sale of shark fins have driven Costa Ricans to tolerate a macabre practice in their waters: “finning” is the inhumane act of slicing off a shark’s valuable fin and throwing the live, mutilated body back into the sea. Though Costa Rican law prohibits finning, spotty enforcement allows the slaughter to continue. Shark finning is largely responsible for the 90-percent decline in shark populations worldwide. Please join ET’s campaign, and help Goldman Environmental Award winner Randall Arauz in his tireless effort to get his country to stop the brutality.
